What Is Chiropractic?
Chiropractic is a safe, natural and effective relief from back pain, neck pain, headaches, extremity pain, poor overall health and low energy levels. Unlike medical doctors, who focus on treating the symptoms, chiropractors treat the cause. Chiropractic emphasizes the recuperative abilities of the body to heal without drugs or surgery by focusing on the inherent relationship between the structural aspects of the body (beginning with the spine) and the nervous system.
The spinal column encases the nervous system, which controls the functionality of all cells, tissue and organs throughout the body. If there are structural issues inhibiting the nervous system from functioning at its most optimized, the body becomes susceptible to disease and injury.
Chiropractors thus treat vertebrae subluxations — vertebrae that are no longer in the correct position or are somehow impaired — by locating misalignments, fixations and other abnormalities within the spine and correcting the affected areas with gentle force. Years of study, training, practice and observation are required to effectively identify subluxations and to accurately adjust the joints of the spinal column.
True health comes from the body’s inherent ability to locate issues and repair them without the help of chemicals or surgery. That is not to say that medical treatments aren’t a viable option in some cases. However, the more someone attempts to manipulate the body’s natural healing process, the more it will fail to reach the true nature of the cause.
What to Expect With Chiropractic
There are three stages of care that a Chiropractor will use when treating a patient.
1. Relief Care
The primary therapy for any chiropractor is providing safe, non-invasive adjustments to the spine (and in some cases, the pelvic region) in order to alleviate subluxated vertebrae and normalize sacroiliac joints. Generally, chiropractors will use their hands or small tools or instruments to adjust the vertebrae. However some may use a combination of both.
Other joints that can be adjusted throughout the body include the hands, feet, wrists, ankles, knees, shoulders, hips and the jaw. Some chiropractors may also be trained to adjust the sutures of the skull. Adjusting these additional joints helps keep normal wear and tear to a minimum and expand the life of the joint by allowing a freer flow of nutrients and expulsion of wastes.
Spinal adjustments should never be painful.
2. Corrective Care
Lifestyle modifications may be introduced into a routine plan to help minimize a person’s risk of injury and health issues. Training in workstation setup, ergonomics, and proper lifting techniques help reduce injury both at home and work.
Chiropractors also receive extensive training in diet and nutrition. Dietary and nutritional counseling may be discussed to reduce the possibility of heart disease, stroke, diabetes and cancer. They may also look at a patient’s posture, alcohol consumption, smoking habits, soda and coffee consumption, and saturated fat consumption to find additional root causes to specific issues that prevent the body from reaching its maximum potential.
For optimized health, any instructions for corrective care should always be followed.
3. Wellness Care
Therapeutic exercise and stretches are a form of preventative care to keep your body operating at maximum optimization. It prevents muscle deterioration and promotes healthy joints, while increasing strength and stability, protecting the body from future injuries, and preventing scar tissue from becoming permanent.
To help with the reduction of pain and muscle hypertonicity, soft tissue and massage therapies such as tripper point therapy, somatic therapy, proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation, acupressure point therapy, and Rolfing may also be utilized.
Above all, continued periodic spinal checkups, either once a month or bi-monthly, is highly recommended.
What Conditions Are Commonly Treated By Chiropractic?
Chiropractic treats many conditions, including conditions that seem unrelated to the spine.
Any pain or discomfort throughout the body can be safely treated through non-invasive holistic chiropractic care. Conditions include: low back pain and stiffness, neck and upper back pain and stiffness, mid-back pain and stiffness, headaches and migraines, leg pain, arm pain, numbness and tingling, extremity joint pain and dysfunction, and carpal tunnel syndrome.
It is important to understand different injuries may manifest in different ways. Treatment plans will vary depending on the type of injury and how it was sustained. Conditions include: automobile accident and whiplash injuries, on-the-job and lifting injuries, sports/athletic injuries, slip and fall injuries, and chronic injuries.
Many medical-type conditions can be caused or aggravated by spinal misalignment, pinching or irritation to the nerve root, or subluxation. So, although chiropractors are trained to identify issues that need medical attention and treatment, patients have been known to benefit from the chiropractic treatment of medical issues. Conditions include: arthritis in the elderly, asthma, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, child ear infections, dizziness and disequilibrium, dysmenorrhea, fatigue, inability to sleep, infantile colic, low energy levels, menstrual pain, and ulcers.
